The Yarmouth-Freeport Varsity Girls avenged an earlier loss to the Brunswick Dragons with thrilling 8-7 victory. Captain Katie Clemmer led the way with five goals, Assistant Captain Georgia Giese registered two goals and an assist, and Caroline Grant posted a goal and four assists in the win.
Three minutes into the first period, the Clippers capitalized on a power play when Georgia Giese scored her first goal of the game with assists from Sophie Newberg and Kyaira Grondin. Clemmer and Grant then combined for three more goals to end the period 4-1. Paige Rinaldi had the secondary assist on Clemmer’s first goal and Giese assisted on Grant’s first tally.
The Clippers went into the second period with a 4-1 lead, but struggled as Brunswick came roaring back. Clemmer’s third goal of the game, with an assist from Lydia Guay kept the game tied at 5-5.
The first shift of the third period was all Clemmer as she scored twice to give the Clippers a two goal lead, but that proved to be a dangerous lead as the Dragons scored twice to tie the game. Georgia Giese took on the role of hero as she picked up an unassisted game-winning goal for the victory.
