Less than 24 hours after their win against Cape Elizabeth High School on Monday night, the Yarmouth Clippers faced off against the Mt. Ararat Eagles at Watson Arena on the Bowdoin campus in Brunswick. Yarmouth is currently in 3rd place in the Class B Southern Division and Mt. Ararat was trying to climb out of the bottom position.
The Clippers came out strong in the first period with good puck movement and many more shots on net than they are typically known for. Freshman defenseman, Ben Moll started the scoring at 13:52 with an even-strength goal. Assisted on the play by forward seniors Jack Buthy and Justin Veilleux, Moll took a well paced shot from the point that found its way to the back of the net. Yarmouth was up 1-0. The opportunities for Yarmouth to score continued, but the goaltending and defensive deflections of the Eagles were enough to keep the score tight at 1-0. Yarmouth had 12 shots on net compared to the Eagles’ 1 shot.
The second period picked up where the first had ended, with the Clippers moving the puck deep into the Mt. Ararat zone. At 9:52, Yarmouth sophomore defenseman, Camden Miller carved out a rebound off a shot from Matthew Robichaud, during a man-advantage power-play, and buried the puck past the Eagles goaltender. 2-0, Yarmouth. Similar to the first period, the Clippers’ scoring well ran dry after the Miller goal. Mt. Ararat continued to amp up their defense, as well as improve on offense. Shots for the period were Yarmouth 11, Mt. Ararat 8.
As the third period started, one could tell that back-to-back games for Yarmouth was taking its toll. Regardless, the Clippers pushed on and continued to be a threat in the offensive zone. It wasn’t until the 8:32 mark that sophomore forward, Oliver Prinn turned the Clipper scoring back on with an unassisted, quick shot and deflection into the Eagles’ net. With the score 3-0, Yarmouth concentrated on their defensive play and tried to keep Mt. Ararat off the scoreboard. Unfortunately, with 3:16 left in the game the Eagles found the back of the net. The score was 3-1. In an attempt to catch the Clippers, Mt. Ararat pulled their goalie in the final minutes to gain the extra skater. As the Eagles’ net stood unoccupied, Camden Miller took a pass from Justin Veilleux and threw it down the ice, 150 feet, for his second goal of the night and the second assist for Veilleux. Yarmouth wins 4-1. Shots for the period were tallied at 9 for Yarmouth and 6 for Mt. Ararat.
The Clippers have their work cut out for them on Saturday (2/15) when they host division leaders, Greely High School at Travis Roy Arena in Yarmouth at 8pm. The Clippers will be celebrating Senior Night. It should be a great evening. Hope to see everyone there!
