Our Yarmouth-Freeport girls ice hockey team continued their winning streak with an exciting over time win tonight at the Ice Vault in Augusta against Winslow/Gardiner. Senior Margaret Perrotta scored twice, including the overtime goal, junior defender Sophie Newberg had a stellar game on the point and sophomore goal tender Allie Perrotta earned the win with several great saves, including a save on a penalty shot in overtime.
Yarmouth-Freeport scored first a minute and a half into the game when senior Kyaira Grondin skated end-to-end, cutting to the middle and scoring with a low snap shot. Gardiner/Winslow would answer two minutes left to tie the game at 1-1 before the period ended.
The second period started with an early penalty by Winslow/Gardiner for hooking, and Senior Grondin was sent to the box less than a minutes later for hooking during the Yarmouth-Freeport power play.
Winslow/Gardiner took the lead on the 4 v 4, capitalizing on a bobbled puck at the blue line and sinking the puck past Perrotta’s blocker. Yarmouth/Freeport was unable to capitalize on a power play opportunity from a hooking call five minutes into the second.
Winslow/Gardiner would next get a power play opportunity at 6:29 when Grondin was called for hooking, which turned into a 4 v 4 with tripping penalty given to Winslow/Gardiner at 5:03. With 1:30 left in the period sophomore Emma Moll found the back of the net during a scramble in front after freshman Olivia Bradford dished the puck to the center while driving up the boards, making the game 2-2 heading into the third.
Yarmouth-Freeport started the third period on the power play for a protocol penalty given to Winslow/Gardiner and had several scoring opportunities, but it was Margaret Perrotta who got the go ahead goal at 12:19 after the power play expired, scoring from the goal line by putting a shot off the back of the goalies legs. Winslow/Gardiner was able to tie the game at 3-3 with six minutes to go in the third.
Yarmouth-Freeport could not capitalize on another power play due to a Winslow/Gardiner checking call and the game was sent into overtime.
The Yarmouth-Freeport girls peppered the Winslow/Gardiner goal tender with several shots for the first two minutes of play in overtime before a Winslow/Gardiner defender chipped the puck up the boards for a breakaway. She was hooked by Grondin and awarded with a penalty shot at 6:49. Allie Perrotta stopped the penalty shot with her left pad giving Yarmouth-Freeport another opportunity to come away with a win.
Margaret Perrotta ended the game after posting up back door and burying the puck off of a rebound from Guay’s shot from the right side of the net.
