Kurt Heywood ’19 scored all four of Yarmouth’s goals en route to a 4-3 overtime win on Senior Night. Heywood more than doubled his goal production for the season with his outstanding, offensive performance. The Clippers have struggled to score goals this season and will need Heywood to continue his streak in the post-season.

The opening face-off followed festivities honoring Yarmouth’s Senior players and their families. In the first period, the Clippers struck first when Dom Morrill ’18 floated a shot on net that was tipped by Kurt Heywood for the goal At the beginning of the second period, Cody Colello ’18 took over netminding duties from Dan Latham ’18 and faced a total of 25 shots in his two periods of duty.

At 2:53 of the second period, Gardiner was awarded a penalty shot when a Yarmouth defenseman covered the puck in the crease. The Gardiner shooter went bar-down on a backhand deke for the tying goal. Less than a minute later, a turnover in Yarmouth’s zone gave Gardiner an easy tally to take the lead and all of a sudden, the Clippers looked in trouble as they trailed 2-1 after two periods.

The third period was all Kurt Heywood as he scored back-to-back goals from tough angles for the hat trick. Michael Guertler ’19 and Joe Truesdale ’18 were credited with assists on Heywood’s second goal and Cooper May picked up the assist on the third goal. However, with 3:25 left in the game and Yarmouth holding a one-goal lead, a turnover at the offensive blue line led to a short-handed, breakaway goal by Gardiner. Colello made a nice save on the initial shot, but was not able to recover to stop the rebound.

The Clippers seemed to win the game on a Joe Truesdale tally with 13 seconds in the game. In a strange turn of eents, Gardiner took a time-out and the officials overturned the call during the time-out.

With teams knotted at three and, the game went into sudden-death overtime. With the teams playing 4 v 4 hockey, Heywood came down the right side and buried his shot in the left, top corner from a seemingly impossible angle for the win.

In the opening round of the playoffs, Yarmouth will host a tough Gorham squad on Tuesday at Travis Roy Arena. Game time is 6:40 pm.
