Joe Truesdale ’18 played the hero with the winning goal in overtime, but Matt Sanborn ’19 deserves much of the credit for adding grit and physicality to the forecheck in the third period. Sanborn assisted on the tying and winning goals and his energy in the final period was the spark the Clippers needed to get going. The win should give Yarmouth important Heal Points in a very competitive Class B South Division.
Yarmouth’s performance in the first period was weak as Gorham registered eight shots on goal before Yarmouth had its first attempt. Despite being outplayed, the teams went to the locker room in a scoreless tie.
The second period was not much better as Gorham continued to dominate play. The Clippers picked up a five-minute power play after Sam Marjerison ’19 took a high stick to the head, but the man-advantage was wasted as the Clippers struggled to generate any scoring opportunities and Gorham picked up a short-handed tally. The Rams extended their lead to two with a power play goal and Yarmouth looked to be in trouble.
The Clippers finally woke up in the third period and turned the tables on Gorham. Every hockey coach talks about getting pucks and bodies to the net because it works. Yarmouth finally began to pressure the Gorham goaltender and it paid off when John Decker crashed the net and put away a rebound off a Cooper May shot.
Yarmouth continued to keep the puck in the offensive zone throughout the period, but struggled to find the equalizer. With 1:41 left in the game, Yarmouth pulled Dan Latham ’18 for an extra skater and a scramble in front of the net led to Cooper May’s tying goal. Matt Sanborn and Kurt Heywood ’19 were credited with the assists.
With the game tied, the teams headed to sudden-death overtime, but it would not last long. At 2:15 into overtime, a neutral zone turnover led to a 2-on-1 opportunity for Joe Truesdale and Matt Sanborn. Sanborn drove the net and Truesdale fed a pass to him. Sanborn’s bid was stopped, but Truesdale was there to pick up the rebound and the victory.
In net, Captain Dan Latham made 27 saves on 29 shots for the win. On Tuesday, Yarmouth will host Mt. Ararat/Lisbon/Morse at Travis Roy Arena. Game time is 7:10 pm.
