Yarmouth-Freeport Drops Close Game

It was an evenly-matched battle, but the Leavitt/Edward Little/Poland Red Hornets held on for the 6-4 victory over Yarmouth-Freeport.

The Red Hornets came out strong scoring three goals in the first period despite the Clippers’ continuous pressure in the offensive zone. In the first period, Senior Katie Clemmer found the back of the net with an assist from freshman Caroline Grant to get Yarmouth-Freeport on the board and the Red Hornets took a 3-1 lead at the intermission.

The second period was a much stronger period for the Clippers who battled for every puck and saw excellent fore-checking efforts from the line of Georgia Giese, Kelsey Meyer and Lydia Guay.   Clemmer notched another tally with an assist from Sophie Newberg.  Margaret Perrotta tipped a shot from Clemmer to bring the deficit to one before the Red Hornets found the net again, Grant also picked up the secondary assist on the Clippers’ goal.

Clemmer notched a hat trick when she drove the net for a rebound off her own shot, and buried the puck in the back of the net.  With 1:41 left in the second period Grant was awarded a penalty shot for being pulled down on a breakaway. She had a great move to beat the goalie to her right side, but the puck caught the goalies’ stick.

Facing a one-goal deficit, the Clippers played well in the third period and had numerous scoring opportunities, but could not find the equalizer.  The Red Hornets scored with nineteen seconds left in the second to bring the game 6-4.

The Varsity Girls are on road against Winslow this Monday, January 16th.  Game time is 1:40 pm at the Ice Vault in Augusta.
